6 Outdoor Activities to Do with Your Dad this Father's Day

June 18, 2022

You know what's better than sending your love in a Father's Day card? Sending your love IRL. Father's Day is the perfect opportunity to thank your dad for all of the love he's given you. From the stories he's told, retold, and told again to the lessons he taught you along the way, and all of the times he showed up to support you,  it's easy to admire all that he does. While you might be mulling over the perfect Father's Day gift, consider giving him something money can't buy, time together. Below we put together 6 Father's Day activities that are all outdoors and all about him.

Plan A BBQ

There's no better way to kick off summer while simultaneously celebrating Father's Day than a backyard BBQ. Plus, it'll give your dad a chance to show off his hard-earned BBQ expertise. You can keep it small with just the family, or invite all of his friends and make an event out of it.  The best part of a BBQ is that you can prepare everything beforehand, so all you have to do is fire up the grill, throw on some grub, and enjoy your time together. Don't forget to load your cooler with his favorite beverages to keep the festivities going all Father's Day long.

Take A Hike

What better way is there to spend time catching up, getting in some exercise, and experiencing nature with your dad?  If you have a dad who loves being on the trail, planning a hike is an easy way to get out and spend time together. Use an app like All Trails to find a hike in your area that matches his difficulty level. A good pair of trekking poles would be an excellent gift for him before heading out on the trail. Not to mention, treating him to a nice dinner or a beer at his favorite brewery would taste all the sweeter after a good day spent outside. Don't have any trails nearby? A walk around the neighborhood is just as lovely (just grab a to-go tumbler and fill it with his favorite beverage.)

Catch A Sports Game

Fathers and sporting events go together like cold beer and a hot day. We can’t think of a single dad who doesn’t at least follow one sport; it seems to be part of their DNA. Snagging a ticket to catch his favorite team is just about as good a gift as it gets. Even if there isn't a pro sports team nearby, catching a local soccer game is just as good as spending time together. So grab your Stadium Seat, fill the cooler, and pick a team. There are no losers when you're having a good time.

Drive To The Beach

Picture this— warm sand between your toes, hearing the same joke your dad has told since you were seven years old, as you both stare off at the crashing waves. You both have a drink in your hand and half-eaten sandwiches in a small cooler. If your dad is the "relax to the max" kinda guy, you can't go wrong with a trip to his favorite body of water. Riding some waves, doing some fishing, or just catching up on life, it doesn't matter. All you need is a few camp chairs, a cooler of beverages, and yourself to make sure dad has a superior Father's Day of bumming on the beach.

Go Camping

If you’ve ever tried to book a proper campsite on Father’s day, you know how painstaking the process can be. You’re sure to see plenty of “no vacancy” signs. But if your dad enjoys the solitude and primitive adventure of camping away from developed sites, you're in luck! Dispersed camping refers to camping anywhere in the National Forest outside a typical designated campground. That means more space between you guys and other campers. Speaking of space, as you get older, it's better to put more space between you and the ground, so we recommend grabbing a cot for dad before heading out.

Drive To The National Park

For the dads who love the outdoors but aren’t as young as they once were, we highly recommend loading up the car and driving to your nearest National Park! Most National Parks are equipped with handicap-accessible sections for all to enjoy. So you guys can pop out of the car and set up a small picnic with an incredible view. (Don't forget the mugs and camp chairs).

At the end of the day, no matter what you do with/for dad, we know he'll appreciate it. Experiences always make the best gifts, especially when they include quality time. We hope you have found this guide helpful. If you need more ideas for gifts, our Mother's Day picks will make good gifts for dads, too.
